Name that bear.

A very simple idea for you.

Ask your local pub if they can host a ‘name the bear’ contest for you.

It works works like this:

  • Buy a teddy bear and give them a name.
  • Create a list of 100 names on a sheet of paper with a big ‘Name the bear’ headline at the top.
  • Display them prominently behind the bar.
  • Sell each name for £1.
  • Once all the names have been sold give the bear to the person who guessed the correct name.

Whatever you decide to do with your 40 minutes we hope you have a whole load of fun and raise lots of money for Simakakata Community School. If you have any questions please leave them below.

Thank you!

Piggy back (Photo credit: tootedom, Flickr)

Piggy back onto another event.

Do you know anyone who is organising an event soon?

It could be a BBQ, a race night, a dinner, a cricket match. Anything where a lot of people will be gathering.

Ask the organiser if you can piggy back onto their event to raise money for Simakakata Community School.

You could organise a cake sale, host an auction, sell raffle tickets, provide some magical entertainment. Any kind of fundraising activity you can think of that is suitable for the event you’ll be piggy backing onto.

If the organiser asks you why they should let you be part of their event, here a few negotiating points you could use.

  • The charity angle could be an extra selling point for the main event. It may help the organiser sell a few extra tickets.
  • You could providing 40 minutes of entertainment which the event organiser doesn’t need to worry about.
  • And if they ask why LearnAsOne over another charity you can explain that all the attendees will know exactly where the money they give is going.

If you have any questions on how to piggy back onto another event then leave them below.

Messi ball juggling

Mickey can't get near him either.

Lionel Messi.

The best footballer in the world. If you haven’t seen his goal the Champions League semi-final then watch it. It’s amazing.

It goes without saying that he is also outstanding at keep-ups.

How many consecutive keep-ups can you do? Note – you don’t have to be sat down when you set your record!

The keep-ups challenge

Give yourself 40 minutes and see how many keep-ups you can do in one go. Ask people to sponsor you per consecutive keep-up. You decide how much. If the ball hits the floor start again from zero. Leave your best score in the comments section below and see if you can become the keep-up champion of LearnAsOne.

You can set up your fundraising page here. Good luck!

Fundraising BBQ

Tasty burgers! (Photo credit: kimyidionne, Flickr)

Warm weather, a BBQ, friends and cold beverages. Sounds like perfection!

Will you add a fundraising twist to one of your summer BBQs this year to raise money for Simakakata Community School?

The 40 minute BBQ

Give yourself 40 minutes of BBQing time, ask your friends to donate 40 minutes to help make snacks, salads and nibbles. Then ask everyone to make a small donation for the food which you give to LearnAsOne.

You can keep the 40 minute theme going through the event if you like. 40 minute DJ slots, 40 minutes of table service, games that last 40 minutes, and so on.

If you fancy going larger scale then go for it. Your local pub, a summer fete or your student halls of residence all make perfect venues. Charge by the item and donate the profits. You could even try and negotiate a cut of any bar takings your BBQ helps to pull in.

Here’s to a brilliant summer of sunshine and fundraising BBQs!

Treasure hunt

Find that treasure.

When I was a kid my folks used to buy mini easter eggs and hide them all over the house.

Behind the fire place, in my wellies, under the bed, in the bread bin. Everywhere they could think of.

They always put two eggs side by side and on Easter Sunday it was a race between me and my sister to find all the eggs first.

We loved it!

Hunt for treasure

Could you take the treasure hunt idea and turn into a fundraiser for Simakakata Community School?

Treasure hunts are simple to organise and a great way to bring your friends and/or classmates together. You can organise a treasure hunt at any time, but it generally works best when you have good weather. There are many forms a treasure hunt can take. One of the most common is explained below.

How to organise a treasure hunt

You will need to create two things. A treasure hunt map and cryptic clues to guide the hunters. This guide explains how to do it.

  1. Work out a route that will last about 40 minutes. You’ll want about four or five five check points before the treasure is found.

  2. Create a map with a few key landmarks highlighted (you can reference these landmarks in your clues if you wish). DO NOT mark the check points on the map.

  3. Work out a cryptic clue for each check point so the hunters know where to head next. You should provide one at the start and hide one at each check point.

  4. Decide if everyone starts at the same time (hectic if you have big numbers) or if you leave a short gap between starters and base the results on time taken to complete the course.

  5. Work out a prize structure. Does everyone who completes the course get a prize or is it a race where only 1st, 2nd and 3rd snaffle some treasure?

  6. Set an entry price. Make sure it’s high enough to cover the prizes and raise lots of money for the school.

  7. Set a date and promote the event. You can download some posters to help you.

If you have any questions then please leave them in the comment section below.

Enjoy your hunt!

Washing cars

Students from Bucks New University washing cars to raise funds.

A couple of options here.

  1. Ask your neighbours or your parents if they’ll pay you to wash their car(s).

  2. Get a group of friends to commit 40 minutes of their time. Ask the owner of a local car park if you can wash cars there. Set up 40 minute shifts, and see how many cars you can wash.

If you get a lot of interest then feel free to go for a double lesson and up your car washing time to 80 minutes.

A couple of tips to you help promote your event

  • Here are some posters you can download to promote your event in advance.
  • If you are going for the group car wash option then try to sell tickets in advance. Some people might not even turn up, but you get their donation anyway. Result!

Have a quick watch of the YouTube video to the right. It’s a few of the children from Simakakata Community School singing one of the school songs.

Could you do a little karaoke style singing to raise some money for the final two classrooms and six teachers’s houses at the school?

You can either put on a Karaoke night, or ask your local karaoke bar if you can add a couple of pounds to the entry fee to raise money for the school.

Your aim should be to sing for a total of 40 minutes through out the night, in a mixture of solos and group performances. You can charge people to make requests, or if your voice isn’t quite as angelic as you’d like, why not get people to pay you so they don’t have to attend and hear you sing!

Add your own fundraising ideas too, and have yourself a great night!
