What does LearnAsOne do?
LearnAsOne gives you a way to help children go to school in the some of the poorest countries in the world.
We start by sitting down with a community and asking them what they need. Then we post it online with all the costs. Plus we share stories, photos and videos from the people who need your help. You get to see exactly what difference your money makes.
How do you run the projects?
In partnership with local organisations. They understand the culture, the needs of the local community, and the laws of the countries. They understand the education system, know where to get local building materials and have all the contacts to make the project a success.
Where does LearnsAsOne work?
There is one simple rule. Any country LearnAsOne works in must be in the bottom 25% of countries as ranked by literacy rate by the United Nations - most of these are in Africa. The first country we have chosen is Zambia.
What makes LearnAsOne different from other charities?
You get to see your money in action. You’ll see stories, photos and videos from every community we work with. You’ll get the chance to ask the pupils, parents and teachers questions. And you’ll get to see the costs of every project so know exactly what your donation will buy.
How many paid staff are there?
Currently just one, Steve, and he gave up his job to set up LearnAsOne. As we grow there will of course be the need to employ more people, but we are very keen to expand the number of volunteers we work with to keep costs down.
How much does it cost to build a school?
Every school is costed on an individual basis. It depends on where it’s built and how much raw materials cost. Where possible the community donates labour for free. We post costs for every school on the website.
How can I help?
There are a whole host of ways you can help. From volunteering your skills, to making a donation, using Facebook to tell all your friends or contributing your ideas using the comments button on the blog. You don’t even need to tell us what you are doing (although we’d love to know). Use the tools already in existence, or build your own. If a LearnAsOne video suddenly appears on the homepage of YouTube that we know nothing about we’d be far from offended!
Will my money be spent on junk mail?
No. LearnAsOne is a digital charity and the majority of our communications will be online. There will of course be costs, but we’d rather not send a piece of mail at a cost of 40p when an email that costs less than 0.01p is just as effective.
Can I help to build the schools?
The key way to make a school sustainable is to involve the community at every stage. All that is holding them back is a lack of funding and training. We aim to provide both so the community can help themselves.
So, it’s great if you are interested in volunteering to help build the school, but the project has far more chance of being sustainable if community build it themselves. We trust you understand. If you would like to volunteer in another way please click here to see how you get involved.
You haven’t answered my question. How can I ask it?
You can either leave it in a comment below or send an email to [email protected]. Whichever you prefer.
